The Solid Rock
An old hymn says “on Christ the Solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand”. So what do you trust? Government, medicine, science—ultimately these can all fail us. But Christ never fails. He works through every circumstance to meet our needs—not always our wants, but our true needs.
Jesus himself is the bedrock, the cornerstone. He himself is the rock at the end of the Sermon on the Mount. “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” Matt. 7:24. Only his words will give us a firm foundation. He is the key to the whole Christian life. He is “the stone which the builders (the Jewish leaders) which has become the cornerstone.” Matt. 21:42
He will sustain us through every storm. It feels like 2020 has been one storm after another. The winds of adversity have blown. Actual adversity has been accompanied by much fear, especially from those who are not built on the rock.
Now it is time to move Forward in Faith. It is time to live our lives and stay founded on the rock, the cornerstone, the Savior. Precautions are fine, but God has our lives in His hands.
Let’s keep these truths in mind as we return to school, to church and to life. It is not a life without risks, but it is a life of faith in “him who is able to keep us from falling”. Interestingly, this promise comes in Jude 24, one of the last verses before the great panorama of Revelation unfolds! Are we in the early season of Revelation? Will we be one of the faithful churches described early in that book?
And speaking of Return, many believers will be gathering in Washington D.C. on September 26 for a day of prayer. Thousands will go to D.C. But we will also be gathering right here at FCC to observe that day in our clubhouse/chapel. We will simulcast the event from 9:00 AM to 6 PM. It’s call The Return because it is a day of repentance and supplication for our culture. Meanwhile, we will meet again this Saturday at 10:00 AM for an hour of prayer in this season of reflection, repentance and renewal. We will also look at parallels in this season with the Jewish feast of Trumpets- The Days of Awe.
Now, Lord, we ask that you hear our prayers concerning our faith in you and moving forward in an uncertain time. Help us to confess once again that our lives are built on you, the rock. Jesus is our cornerstone. He is the one who never fails us nor forsakes us. Thank you Lord, that even though we often don’t understand what is happening, we often look back and see how your hand guided us. We claim that for this season as well. Thank you that ministry has not stopped, even though it has looked different.
Help us to return confidently to our schools, to our churches and to the fellowship of believers.
We pray for the Return that will be observed on September 26 that will signify a turning point in this nation and culture.
Meanwhile, thank you that you are our rock, our fortress and our help in time of need. You are the solid rock on which we stand. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
